Greetings and Salutations,
As if we didn’t know where to look this Thursday, Who’s on Third tells us right in its name. Situated right on Third Street, Who’s on Third is a bar that needs no introduction. They are filling the role of sports bar in every way, with amazing food featuring burgers, brats, wings, and their famous cheese curds battered in beer. Who’s on Third wants to be the place you go to watch the game whether it’s the Bucks, Brewers, or Packers – and they feature drink specials for each sporting event. When Who’s on Third opened back in 2014, they’ve been working to become the most recognized sports bar in Milwaukee; this was the goal for Bobby Wiltgen, and to date, I would say he is doing a pretty darn good job. Join us this Thursday night as we celebrate Milwaukee with great drinks, great people, and one heck of a sports bar for Welcome to Thursdays!
It is quite interesting how Who’s on Third got its name. One would think that it came from that famous Abbott and Costello joke “Who’s on First”, but the story is much more interesting and magical. No one really knows how it happened or where he came from, but in the summer of 1944 the Milwaukee Brewers were taking on the Indianapolis Indians in a Monday morning game. As the players started to warm up at Borchert Field, their third basemen Bill Nagel was nowhere to be found. The starting time crept closer and closer and still no Bill. Unfortunately, Milwaukee was already short-handed due to an unfortunate accident involving a case of Old Milwaukee beer, 2 street mimes, and one very angry goose; if Bill didn’t show up the Brewers would have to forfeit the game.
The manager at the time was Casey Stangel. Not knowing what to do, he ran to his office to have a quick can of Old Milwaukee to calm his nerves. He looked down at the can and asked the beer gods if they would grant the Brewers the luck to be able to play. Suddenly the room grew quiet and the can began to speak, “If you take the field, he will come”. Unsure of this, Casey thanked and drank the magical beer and gathered his team to take the field. When they arrived, a beacon of light shone down on the third base, and a man appeared. This was no ordinary man though, this was a magical barrel man. The crowd sat back in awe as the team began warm ups and the question among the fans was all the same: “Who’s on Third?” This would, in fact, be the start of the legendary Barrel Man of Milwaukee and the start of one heck of winning streak as the Brewers who went on to make the playoffs that year. The rest is history.
Cheers my friends!
