Greetings and Salutations my Friends,
Well the day has finally come, Welcome to Thursdays will finally be taking over the Pedal Tavern! It is up to all who have signed up to show the streets of Milwaukee just how much Welcome to Thursdays loves a good time. I urge all who are riding to have an amazing time and if you can, snap some pictures for Pedal Tavern and our WTT page.
For those who did not sign up in time for the tavern that pedals, no need to fret! In some ways we are the lucky ones, as we will be hanging out at a tavern that does not pedal – the historic and amazing Steny’s Tavern. Never heard of it? Well it’s your lucky day because my great friends at The Squeaky Curd did one heck of an article about the bar and it’s owners which you can find here! Steny’s is known for having an amazing beer selection, one of Milwaukee’s best Bloody Marys, and some epic wings (60 cent wings this Thursday, FYI!).
This Thursday is the pure definition of fun – whether you are riding the streets of Milwaukee on the Pedal Tavern or chomping on some wings and sipping on a cold one at Steny’s. For those riding the pedal tavern, you are meeting at Steny’s at 7:30 to sign some papers and your ride starts at 8! All this excitement got me to thinking about how the heck someone came up with the pedal tavern. Well my friends, after hours upon hours of extensive research deep in the caverns of Milwaukee’s historic vault of all things old (it’s a real place is swear) I have found the answers…
It all started back in 1904, the buzz of the amazing taste of Old Milwaukee was well in tune to the world – and the people of Milwaukee could not get enough of it. Those people included the very workers that helped make this historic brew. Like breweries today, when demand is high, the deliveries never seem to end; this was no different for Old Mil. Their #1 delivery driver, Johansson Stefan Henrik the IV, was always on the go – as a result, he never had time to enjoy an Old Milwaukee.
One day, he approached the high council of the Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company (owners of Old Mil at the time) and requested that he make a new delivery vehicle that drove itself, so it would let him enjoy Old Mil while on the job. At first, they said no claiming the fuel costs were too high; but Johansson knew that there must be another way.
When delivering the old way, one could not enjoy the great taste of Old Mil whilst driving.
The next day as he was loading up his truck, he noticed 7 workers laying around doing nothing. Johansson approached these men, only to realize that they were the master brewers of Old Mil! He shouted, asking why they were sitting around, and in a soft reply, they explained that with the popularity of Old Mil there was no need for a new beer. They stated that they were willing to work in any other department, due to extreme boredom. It was here that Johansson had an idea: a vehicle powered by multiple people where you can still enjoy Old Mil. This my friends was the birth of the pedal tavern. After that, Johansson delivered each case with a cheers to Old Mil and the master brewers became master peddlers. The rest is history.
With the pedal truck, all could respect and enjoy the amazing taste of Old Mil!!!
