I’m Jacob Burr, WTT Member #60, and your guest writer for Welcome to Thursdays. This week we travel to Just Art’s Saloon which is, in my humble opinion, the best dive bar experience in Milwaukee. Picture it: a vacant lot with a permanently parked rusted truck from the 60s, a smoker’s porch out back, a stray cat affectionately named Orangie, and a small garden fountain that really sets the mood. Inside you’ll find Art telling dad jokes to the regulars with his white beard and t-shirt tucked into his sweatpants. What’s not to love?!
Thursday’s very own Jacob Burr (WTT member #60) at Just Art’s.
Art constantly talks about trading in his piece of paradise in exchange for an RV and a trip to Burning Man (this is actually true). I have consistently patronized Art’s since I moved to Milwaukee in 2014, and I think that this Thursday night might be our final chance to convince Art to stay in Milwaukee, as I believe a suburban witch put him under a curse.
Two summers ago, I was enjoying a few drinks with some friends on the back porch (the drinks are cheaper out there for some reason), when we saw a woman in her mid-30s walk out to her mini-van that was parked just beyond the bar. She mumbled something as she tiptoed by us, but none of us could make out what it was.
A few minutes later she arrived back on the porch with a white baby goat in her arms (again, not lying here, this is true). She proudly showed off her goat as she walked around the bar. Everyone was entranced, especially Art. As Art reached across the bar to pet her newborn, she spoke softly under the furrow of her brow, and as she did, I swear her eyes turned pure white. After Art finished greeting the goat, her eyes faded back to pale blue and she disappeared out the door. Ever since then, Art won’t stop talking about leaving Milwaukee for Burning Man.
I have no idea why she chose Art to cast out of Milwaukee, but I do know we need to convince him to stay so we can keep enjoying his modestly priced beer and free appetizers.
