Loyal Welcome to Thursday and The Squeaky Curd readers, we must apologize up front for the mediocre quality of this week’s article. Your dedicated and creative scribe, Jeremy Jay Blandin, is currently on a well-deserved vacation.
Rumor has it he is on a 4-day silent retreat, spending one day meditating in each of the city’s original breweries (or what’s left of them): Pabst, Miller, Blatz and Schlitz. No doubt important work that feeds both his soul and his body, as he will be imbibing nothing but the beers that the historic brewing titans of Milwaukee are known for. This 4-day sacrifice will provide further inspiration and allow him to continue to deliver his impressive weekly Welcome to Thursday articles. For that, we will raise a glass to Jeremy on Thursday.
While Jeremy’s writing and presence are integral parts of the Welcome to Thursdays experience, we hope that his absence doesn’t deter any of you from coming out to Gee Willickers in Riverwest. This is exactly the type of bar that Welcome to Thursdays was created to discover.
Built in the 1880s? They were. Neon Blatz sign? They have it. Free snacks on the bar? You bet. Website? Who needs it! Cheap beers on tap? Of course. Friendly barkeep? No doubt. Gee Willickers has all the components of a classic neighborhood dive bar and it begs you to visit.
You will have to be buzzed in once you arrive at the door, but do not fret: you don’t need a password, just a friendly smile and perhaps a wave. And knowing for certain that the group photo will bring an extra source of motivation to Jeremy as he works to complete his silent retreat, how could you pass up an evening at Gee Willickers?
